This one is an oldie but a goodie. It’s been a little over two years since Em and Erika decided to elope before their larger wedding celebration in Maine.
They had the idea to elope early because it was the 20th anniversary of a Massachusetts ruling to legalize same-sex marriage. In fact, they said their “I do’s” in the Cambridge City Hall which is the same location that the first same-sex marriage ceremony was performed in the United States. As a lesbian photographer, this was beyond special to have captured.
Aside from the impactful moment we were paying homage to, I got to witness Em and Erika’s union in the most beautiful and intimate way. After it was over, we took some portraits outside on the steps and around the city hall. Later, we headed over to one of their favorite spots (Tasty Burger) for some celebratory burgers, which I got to partake in.
And honestly? That felt like the most perfect ending to the most perfect day. No big venue, no seating charts, no timelines, just two people in love, a killer burger, and a moment that will genuinely live in my heart forever.
Elopements have a way of stripping everything back to what actually matters. And what mattered that day was Em and Erika choosing each other, in a place that meant something, on a date that meant even more. I don’t take it lightly that they trusted me to be there for it.
To Em and Erika, thank you for letting me be your third wheel on one of the most meaningful days of my life, not just yours.
