An Engagement Session Close to Home | Emma + Tristan in Dudley, Massachusetts

Engagements

Some of the most meaningful sessions don’t happen in dramatic landscapes or downtown streets—they happen in places full of memories.

That was definitely the case with Emma and Tristan’s engagement session, which took place at a home filled with history, love, and maple trees—literally. When Emma told me they’d be doing their session at Tristan’s grandparents’ house in Dudley, Massachusetts, I knew right away it would be something special. What I didn’t know was how much heart and history lived in that space—or that I’d walk away with a jar of maple syrup from the very tree we took photos under (more on that later).

A Place Full of Stories

There’s something about photographing people in places they love. Every corner of Tristan’s grandparents’ property felt personal—from the porch where they sipped coffee in the mornings to the big yard where Tristan played as a kid. These aren’t just backdrops—they’re part of the story. And for a Boston documentary style wedding photographer, that’s gold. We wandered the yard, pausing where the light was softest and the laughter was loudest. Emma and Tristan were naturals—playful, sweet, and so clearly at home with each other. Their love felt rooted, much like the trees around us.

Don’t Forget the Dog 🐾

No family session is complete without all members present, so of course their pup made a proud appearance! The dog stole the show for a bit (as they tend to do), but it made for some of my favorite candid moments. We even paused for a quick family photo, complete with tail wags and a few slobbery kisses.

Planning the Big Day

After we wrapped up the photos, we sat down on the back deck and chatted through their wedding timeline. I love taking time during engagement sessions to do this—it helps us build connection and gives couples the space to talk through the details without the rush of the wedding day itself. We talked about what moments they’re most looking forward to, who they want to prioritize in photos, and how to make the timeline feel smooth and stress-free. It’s part of what I offer not just as a photographer, but as someone who’s walking through this season with them.

A Sweet Surprise

Just before I left, Tristan’s grandpa came out holding a small glass jar and handed it to me with a smile. Inside? Homemade maple syrup, tapped and bottled right from a maple tree in their yard. It was the kind of thoughtful, unexpected gesture that stayed with me long after I pulled out of the driveway. In a world where everything moves fast, moments like this matter—where the lines between client and friend start to blur, and where what I do becomes more than just photography.

Final Thoughts

Emma and Tristan’s engagement session wasn’t just beautiful—it was personal, emotional, and rooted in real life. These are the kinds of sessions that remind me why I love documentary style photography. It’s about capturing people not just at their best, but at their most themselves. If you’re planning your own engagement session—whether it’s in the city, the woods, or your grandparents’ backyard—I’d be honored to help you tell your story.
